As artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, products, and services continue to expand we also have to address the ethical considerations accompanying AI integration into our daily lives. Beyond the practicalities of technology use, there are questions about ethics, human autonomy, privacy, and fairness. AI challenges our ethical frameworks and raises important concerns about how we responsibly deploy and regulate this technology.
Anthropomorphism and AI
The human tendency to anthropomorphize—to attribute human-like traits to non-human entities—plays a significant role in shaping our interactions with AI. When people see AI systems as more human, it can enhance engagement and acceptance. However, this anthropomorphism also raises ethical questions related to expectations and trust (Duffy, 2003).
Emotional Engagement and Ethical Design
Emotional Engagement: When users anthropomorphize AI, they may form emotional bonds with these systems, as seen with social robots and virtual assistants. While this engagement can increase user satisfaction, it also creates ethical concerns regarding transparency and manipulation (Turkle, 2011).
